From Mark: Every American should experience England and Scotland at least once — though one visit is rarely enough. Across the Atlantic lies a landscape that feels at once foreign and strangely familiar: a place of ancient castles and cathedral spires, green hills and weathered stone, where so much of America’s own language, culture and history has its roots. Britain and America have famously been described as two nations divided by a common language, but the ties between them run far deeper — through shared ideals and traditions, literature and music, conflict and friendship, and centuries of intertwined history.

This journey takes you into the heart of that story. In London, you’ll encounter the great landmarks that have witnessed centuries of history: Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral and the formidable Tower of London. Beyond the capital, the landscape begins to unfold — from the royal grandeur of Windsor Castle to the dreaming spires of Oxford, the honey-colored villages and rolling countryside of the Cotswolds, and Stratford-upon-Avon, where Shakespeare was born more than four centuries ago.

As you travel north, the story grows older still. In the ancient walled city of York, Roman legions, Viking settlers and medieval kings have all left their mark. From there, the road carries you through the mountains, lakes and sweeping valleys of the Lake District before crossing the border into Scotland — a country of dramatic landscapes, proud traditions, remarkable history and unforgettable character.

More than a collection of famous places, this is a journey through the landscapes and stories that helped shape Britain — and, in countless ways, America too. You’ll walk through nearly two thousand years of history, encounter some of the most beautiful scenery in the British Isles, and discover that the connection between our two countries is not simply something found in history books. It can still be felt in the streets, churches, castles, villages and people you encounter along the way.

I’ll host this trip and will be joined by my friend Jonathan Self, a wonderful tour guide. After graduating from Oxford University, Jonathan turned his focus to showing people the history and highlights of the country he loves. You’ll enjoy traveling with him..
