For years and years, we’ve taken our travelers all over the country and the world to experience Church history where it happened. We’ve traveled to the sites of the Restoration, walked through pioneer communities, visited temples and historic places, and shared the stories of the people who sacrificed so much to build the Church.
Well, in 2027 we finally get to stay home!
With the Salt Lake Temple Open House coming, we have this incredible opportunity to welcome people from around the world to our own backyard and share the history and stories of Salt Lake City. And we are SO excited about it!
The Salt Lake Temple is something many of us have driven past hundreds of times. We see it on Temple Square, recognize it instantly in photographs and probably don’t stop very often to think about what it took to put it there.
Forty years.
Construction on the Salt Lake temple began in 1853 and wasn’t completed until 1893. Think of the people who worked on that temple knowing they might never live to see it finished. Think about the families, craftsmen, pioneers and Church leaders whose stories are connected to those walls.
Now, more than 130 years later, another generation of craftsmen, engineers and experts has taken on the responsibility of preserving and strengthening this remarkable building for generations to come.
And in 2027, we get to go inside and see it.
That’s pretty amazing.
As soon as we realized what a significant event this was going to be, we knew we wanted to create more than a package with a hotel room and an Open House reservation. That’s not really what we do. We wanted more.
One of my favorite things about group travel has always been hearing the story while standing in the place where it happened. It changes the experience.
So that’s exactly what we want to do here.
We’ll take you through historic Salt Lake City and introduce you to some of the people and stories that shaped it. We’ll even visit the Salt Lake City Cemetery, where prophets, pioneers and some wonderfully interesting characters from Utah history have stories waiting to be told.
We’ll include opportunities for Music & the Spoken Word, special activities around Temple Square and, of course, the Salt Lake Temple Open House itself.
And we’re planning a special Speaker Series throughout the season, bringing in authors, educators, historians and other wonderful guests to talk about everything from the original temple and the pioneers who built it to the incredible engineering and craftsmanship involved in its renovation.
We want you to understand not only what you’re seeing, but why it matters.
There’s something really fun about this for those of us at Morris Murdock Escorted Tours. We’re usually the ones saying, “Pack your bags—we’re taking you somewhere!”
This time we get to say: “Come to Salt Lake City. Let us show you around.”
