Exploring Switzerland by Train: A Magical Alpine Summer Adventure

by Wendy Fracchia

This summer, I was lucky enough to return to one of the most enchanting destinations in the world—Switzerland—and once again, it delivered pure Alpine magic. We traveled with a fantastic group of adventurers who were ready to explore the breathtaking Swiss Alps the way the locals do: by train.  And in Switzerland, traveling by rail is part of the experience. It’s more than transportation,it’s serene, scenic, efficient, and an unforgettable way to appreciate the beauty of this remarkable country.

Zurich: Chocolate, Culture & New Friends - Our journey began in Zurich, Switzerland’s bustling capital. After settling in, we made our first stop at the iconic Lindt Home of Chocolate.

There, we immersed ourselves in the art of chocolate-making—learning, tasting, smelling, and savoring every moment. It was the sweetest possible start to our adventure.

That evening’s welcome dinner gave us the chance to meet the travel group we’d be sharing this experience with. The excitement was contagious—everyone had a dream moment they couldn’t wait to see.

The following day, we explored Zurich’s rich history before heading toward the German border to witness the mighty Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe by volume. The roar of the water paired with stunning views made it a spectacular stop.

Mt. Rigi, Lucerne & the Beauty of Central Switzerland - Leaving Zurich behind, we traveled to Lucerne—with a scenic detour up Mt. Rigi. The views from the summit were breathtaking: sweeping panoramas of mountains, lakes, and sky that felt like a blessing.

Lucerne itself was everything you imagine Switzerland to be—a lakeside city so charming it looks like it was made for postcards. We enjoyed its old bridges, lakefront views, cobblestone streets, and vibrant local culture.

That evening, we arrived in Bern, Switzerland’s federal capital. Our perfectly located hotel made it easy to explore the historic old town and even catch the famous Zytglogge Clock Tower in action.

Jungfrau Region: The Top of Europe & Valley Waterfalls - The next day took us deep into the Bernese Oberland. We traveled to Grindelwald and up toward the “Top of Europe,” where we stepped onto a glacier, admired incredible ice sculptures, and took in views that make you feel like you’re standing on the roof of the world.

On our descent, we stopped in Lauterbrunnen, home to 72 waterfalls. The walk to Staubbach Falls, one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe, felt like stepping into a fairytale.

Zermatt & The Matterhorn: A Bucket-List Moment - From the valleys of Lauterbrunnen, we continued to Zermatt, home to the world-famous Matterhorn.

Because of its unique climate, fewer than half of visitors ever see the peak clearly but we did! It appeared like a crown above the village, and we captured perfect photos before riding four gondolas to one of the highest viewpoints.

Even when clouds rolled in later, it didn’t matter. The experience was unforgettable, and the joy was written on everyone’s faces.

The Glacier Express: Switzerland’s Most Scenic Train - Just when we thought it couldn’t get more beautiful, we boarded the legendary Glacier Express. Known as the world’s slowest express train, it offers panoramic windows and miles of breathtaking scenery.

It was the perfect day to sit back, relax, and enjoy the company of our group as Switzerland drifted past like a living landscape painting.

Pontresina & Roseg Glacier: A Storybook Finale - Our final adventure brought us to the St. Moritz region and the charming village of Pontresina. Here, horse-drawn wagons carried us up the valley toward the Roseg Glacier.

The rushing milky-blue glacier river, the pine forests, the wide valley—everything looked like a real-life Bob Ross painting, complete with "happy trees."

What’s Next: Our Exciting 2026 Switzerland Tour Expansion - While we truly have perfected this itinerary with the Glacier Express—and will offer this beloved tour again in 2027—we also know there is even more of Switzerland we can’t wait to show you.

That’s why in 2026, we’re launching an enhanced Switzerland tour with a brand-new ending, allowing you to explore even more of the country’s deep history, culture, and natural wonders.

After visiting Zermatt and admiring the Matterhorn, we will head west to the sparkling shores of Lake Geneva and the elegant town of Montreux. There, we will explore the area and tour the stunning Chillon Castle, one of Europe’s most iconic lakeside fortresses.

Next, our journey takes us north with a delicious stop in the medieval village of Gruyères. We’ll visit a traditional cheese-making facility to learn how authentic Swiss Gruyère is produced, then stroll the fairytale-like village perched quietly in its green valley.

Our grand finale brings us to Basel, beautifully situated on the Rhine River and uniquely located at the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany, and France.

Whether you continue your European travels or head home, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve truly seen the full spectrum of Switzerland’s most unforgettable highlights.
