The country of Peru is amazing in its diversity of terrain, people, and history. The tour we completed in May didn’t include everything there is to see in Peru. Still, it certainly included some fabulous highlights including Lima, Cuzco, the headwaters of the Amazon, the Sacred Valley, and the incomparable Machu Picchu. Our group of 36 came with various backgrounds and ages but were all curious and anxious to learn about this amazing land and people. We were together for 11 days and loved the experience.

Some of our highlights and memories include:

Lima  Our adventure began in Lima, the vibrant capital city of Peru. Lima is often the gateway to the country's diverse landscapes and historical treasures. The city itself is a blend of modernity and tradition, offering a glimpse into Peru's colonial past and its dynamic present.

Historical Insights - We started our tour in the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where we admired the grandeur of colonial architecture. The Plaza Mayor, or Main Square, is surrounded by significant buildings such as the Government Palace, the Cathedral of Lima, and the Archbishop's Palace. Our local guides's commentary on the history and significance of these structures brought the past to life, helping us understand the city's evolution from its founding by Francisco Pizarro in 1535 to its status as a modern metropolis.

Cultural Experience - One of the highlights of our time in Lima was visiting the Larco Museum. This museum houses an impressive collection of pre-Columbian artifacts, including pottery, textiles, and gold and silver jewelry. Our guide's deep knowledge of the ancient cultures of Peru, such as the Moche and the Inca, added depth to our appreciation of the exhibits and provided unique insights into the lives and beliefs of ancient Peruvians.

Culinary Delights - Lima is also renowned for its culinary scene, and we were eager to sample its world-famous cuisine. We had the opportunity to taste ceviche, a dish made from fresh raw fish marinated in citrus juices, and we experienced the fusion of traditional Peruvian ingredients with modern culinary techniques. These meals were more than just food; they were a celebration of Peru's rich culinary heritage.

The Headwaters of the Amazon - From Lima, we traveled to the headwaters of the Amazon, one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. This part of our journey was a stark contrast to the urban environment of Lima, immersing us in the lush, tropical rainforest.

River Expedition  - We embarked on a river expedition along the Amazon River, guided by a team of local experts. The journey on the river was mesmerizing, with the dense jungle on either side teeming with wildlife. We spotted colorful birds, playful monkeys, serious looking caiman (related to alligators) and turtles surrounded with colorful butterflies (they love turtle saliva). Our guide's knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Amazon were impressive. They explained the ecological significance of the rainforest and the ongoing efforts to preserve this vital ecosystem. We had the opportunity to walk and canoe through this amazing jungle full of wonderful wildlife and vegetation. Our lodging was comfortable and the food was excellent.

Cuzco  After our Amazon adventure, we headed to Cuzco, the former capital of the Inca Empire. Our stay overnight was mostly to get us used to the altitude before heading to Machu Picchu. We were able to relax, do a bit of shopping and get prepared for our next adventure.

Machu Picchu - No trip to Peru would be complete without a visit to Machu Picchu, the iconic Inca citadel set high in the Andes Mountains. This UNESCO World Heritage site is often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas" and is one of the most well-preserved and visually stunning archaeological sites in the world.

The Journey - The journey to Machu Picchu itself was an adventure. We took a scenic train ride from Cuzco to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to Machu Picchu. The train ride offered breathtaking views of the Andean landscape, with its towering mountains, lush valleys, and rushing rivers. The route follows the path of the ancient Inca Trail.

Exploring the Citadel  - Arriving at Machu Picchu was a moment of awe and wonder. The site exceeded all our expectations with its dramatic setting and intricate stonework. Our guides directed us through the various sections of the citadel, including the Sun Gate, the Temple of the Sun, and the Intihuatana stone. Their detailed explanations about the site's construction, its purpose, and the daily lives of its inhabitants brought the ancient city to life.

Spiritual Experience - For many, Machu Picchu is not just a historical site but also a place of spiritual significance. The energy of the place is palpable, and it's easy to see why it was considered sacred by the Incas. We took a moment to reflect and absorb the surroundings, feeling a deep connection to the history and spirituality of this remarkable place. We even had the blessing of having on of the young men in our group propose to his future wife on the site with parents looking on. It was spectacular… what a backdrop

The Sacred Valley - On our return from Machu Picchu, the highlight was the Sacred Valley, a region that was of great importance to the Incas due to its fertile land and strategic location. The valley is dotted with ancient ruins, traditional villages, and stunning landscapes.

Pisac and Ollantaytambo - We visited the ruins of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, both of which are remarkable examples of Inca architecture and urban planning. Pisac is known for its impressive agricultural terraces and its strategic military position. The terraces were not only used for farming but also played a role in controlling the flow of water and preventing erosion.

Ollantaytambo, on the other hand, served as both a fortress and a temple. Its massive stone terraces and the intricate design of its urban center are a testament to the advanced engineering skills of the Incas. Our guide's insights into the historical and cultural context of these sites made our visits incredibly enriching.

Local Culture - The Sacred Valley is also home to vibrant traditional communities. We visited a local market, where we had the opportunity to interact with artisans and farmers. The market was a riot of colors, with stalls selling everything from fresh produce to handmade textiles. It was so interesting to visit with the local vendors and learn more about their crafts and daily lives. The natural beauty of the Sacred Valley is breathtaking. Surrounded by towering mountains and lush greenery, the valley is a haven of tranquility. 

Cuzco - Cuzco, is the former capital of the Inca Empire, a city steeped in history, with its cobblestone streets, ancient Inca walls, and colonial-era churches.

Historical Significance - Cuzco's rich history is evident at every turn, and our exploration of the city was profoundly enriching. We visited the Qorikancha, the Temple of the Sun, which was one of the most important temples in the Inca Empire. The Spanish colonizers built the Santo Domingo Church on its foundations, symbolizing the blend of Inca and Spanish influences that characterizes much of Cuzco's architecture. Our guide's explanations about the temple's original splendor and its transformation under Spanish rule provided a deeper understanding of Cuzco's layered history.

Architectural Marvels - We also explored the Sacsayhuamán fortress, a remarkable example of Inca engineering. The massive stones used in its construction fit together so precisely that it's impossible to slip a piece of paper between them. The detailed accounts of the fortress's strategic importance and its role in Inca ceremonies added depth to our appreciation of this architectural marvel.

Our journey through Peru was an unforgettable experience. From the bustling streets of Lima to the tranquil beauty of the Sacred Valley, every moment was filled with discovery and wonder. Peru's history, culture, and natural beauty enriched our trip, providing us with insights and memories that will last a lifetime. Peru is a land of contrasts and wonders, and exploring it was a truly exceptional adventure.
