Day 1/2: Friday and Saturday, March 20 - 21, 2020

U.S.A. • Transatlantic flight to Amman, Jordan

We will take flights from our various home cities, make transfers, and arrive the following day at the Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan, an ancient city of Old and New Testament times known as Philadelphia.  We will stay at Le Grand Hotel for two nights.

Meals : Dinner
Day 3: Sunday, March 22, 2020

Amman • Petra

This morning we will drive south through the ancient regions of Moab and Edom to the ruins of Petra, voted one of the “Seven New Wonders of the World,” where we will walk to the ruins of this “rose red city half as old as time.” This wonder of the ancient world, built out of sandstone by the Nabataeans, has beautiful temples and amphitheaters carved out of the cliffs which surround the hidden valley. We will visit the Treasury and other sites as time will allow and then return to Le Grand Hotel for the night.

Meals : Breakfast, Dinner
Day 4: Monday, March 23, 2020

Amman • Jerash • Sea of Galilee

We will begin our day by traveling along the highlands of Gilead, first driving past the Jabbok River that crosses the territory of Gilead.  This was where Jacob wrestled with the angel and was given the name Israel.  We will continue northward until we arrive at the ancient Greek–Roman city of Jerash.  Jerash was a part of the Decapolis, was second in size to Damascus, and was known as the “City of a Thousand Pillars.”  It is one of the most complete ruins of any Greek–Roman city in the world.  We will continue northwest and cross the border into Israel, arriving at Tiberias on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, where we will check in to the Leonardo Hotel for three nights.

Meals : Breakfast, Dinner
Day 5: Tuesday, March 24, 2020

Sea of Galilee • Capernaum • Dan • Banias • Golan Heights

Our day will begin with a morning boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, after which we will see the Galilee Boat that dates back to the time of Jesus. We will next visit Capernaum, the center of Jesus’ Galilean ministry, and discuss the Bread of Life sermon, then on to the Mount of Beatitudes, where we will discuss the Sermon on the Mount. We will then go north, passing by the Canaanite city of Hazor on our way to Tel Dan.  Here Jeroboam erected a golden calf for the Israelites to worship.  The restored walls and gates give us an excellent idea of the fortifications Joshua would have faced as he conquered the land.  We will visit Banias, known as Caesarea Philippi in the days of Jesus.  This is where the Savior asked His disciples, “Whom say ye that I am?”  We will then continue on to the Golan Heights which have been fought over since Old Testament times.  We will make a brief stop near the Syrian border where somewhere near there, while on the road to Damascus, Paul had his life-changing vision of Christ.  We will then return to the Leonardo Hotel for the night.

Meals : Breakfast, Dinner
Day 6: Wednesday, March 25, 2020

Nazareth • Mount Carmel • Caesarea

We will begin the day by stopping at the Mount Arbel Nature Reserve for a panoramic view of the Sea of Galilee and Plain of Gennesaret. From there we will drive through the hills of Galilee to Nazareth and visit Nazareth Village. The village represents what life may have been like during the early life of Jesus.  We then stop at Mount Precipice for a panoramic view of the Jezreel Valley and Mount Tabor, the possible site of the Transfiguration. We will then cross the Jezreel Valley, passing Tel Megiddo, as we travel up the Mount Carmel range to Muhraka, the traditional site of Elijah’s confrontation with the prophets of Baal. We then travel southwest to the Mediterranean coast to Caesarea and visit a Roman aqueduct, hippodrome, and amphitheater, where we will discuss the apostles Peter and Paul and their relationship to Roman leaders who lived there.  We will end our day by returning to the Leonardo Hotel for our last night on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.

Meals : Breakfast, Dinner
Day 7: Thursday, March 26, 2020

Jordan River Valley • Qasr el Yahud • Masada • Jerusalem

Today we will travel south down the Jordan River Valley, passing near Jericho and discussing important biblical events that occurred there. We will stop at Qasr el Yahud, the traditional site of the baptism of Jesus, and discuss the importance of His baptism. Our drive will continue south along the Dead Sea near the site of Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, for a brief picture stop, and then on to Masada to take the tram up to the fortress, where we will recall a tragic event in Jewish history. We will travel back north, float in the Dead Sea, and drive through the Judean wilderness and along the Wadi Kelt on our way to Jerusalem.  After entering Jerusalem, we will go to an overlook of the Old City from the Mount of Olives and then travel to the Shephardic Hotel in the Old City for the rest of our nights in Israel.

Meals : Breakfast, Dinner
Day 8: Friday, March 27, 2020

Bethlehem • Jerusalem

We begin the day by driving to Bethlehem to see the Church of the Nativity, including St. Jerome’s Grotto, and if possible, a shepherds’ field, to review the biblical events that occurred in this area. We will drive past the Knesset (Israel’s parliament) on our way to the Israel Museum to see the Shrine of the Book (Dead Sea Scrolls display) and the Model of the City of Jerusalem to see what the city looked like during the time of Jesus. We will then go to the Old City, and, if time permits, shop and/or visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre before walking to the Western Wall to experience the Jewish people welcoming in the Sabbath.  After dinner, those who choose to may shop.

Jerusalem

We will begin this day with a visit to Gethsemane where the great atoning sacrifice took place. We will then walk through the Orson Hyde Memorial Garden and review the history of the Church in the Holy Land. Our next stop is at the BYU Jerusalem Center where we will attend sacrament meeting with members of the Jerusalem Branch. We will visit the traditional Upper Room—scene of the Last Supper, washing of feet, and the last teachings of Jesus to His disciples—and then visit St. Peter’s in Gallicantu, possible site of the cock’s crowing and the palace of Caiaphas. We will visit the Pool of Bethesda to recall the events recorded in John 5. We’ll also see the Sisters of Zion Convent, built on the site of the Antonia Fortress where Pilate may have questioned Jesus. We conclude our day by visiting Golgotha and the Garden Tomb to discuss the sacredness of the Resurrection. After dinner, those who choose may shop.

Meals : Breakfast, Dinner

Jerusalem

We will begin our day with a visit to the Holy (Temple) Mount, or Mount Moriah, ancient site of the temples of Solomon and Herod, now occupied by the Dome of the Rock and El Aksa Mosque. This mount is where Gabriel opened the New Testament and where the Savior did most of His teaching when He was in Jerusalem. We will tour the Rabbinic (Western Wall) Tunnel and explore the ruins located south of the Temple Mount where we can walk the sidewalks and stairs of Jesus’ time. The day ends with our visiting the City of David and walking through Hezekiah’s Tunnel, a water system dating back to the time of Isaiah. We return to the hotel at the end of the day and after dinner do last-minute shopping and packing to prepare for our trip home or to Egypt.
