Days 1 and 2:

U.S.A. • Transatlantic Flight • Istanbul, Turkey

We will take a morning flight from our various U.S.A. homes, change planes at JFK airport in New York, and arrive the following morning at the airport in Istanbul, Turkey.  Like Rome, Istanbul is built on seven hills.  Settled by the Greeks in the eighth century BC, the city was known as Byzantium.  In AD 330 the Roman emperor Constantine made it his capital and called it Constantinople.  After the western part of the Roman Empire fell, Constantinople was the capital of the Byzantine Empire for a thousand years until 1453, when it was taken by the Ottoman Turks and renamed Istanbul.  We will enjoy a city tour of parts of Istanbul—including the Hagia Sophia, an architectural marvel built by Emperor Justinian in AD 527; the Blue Mosque, an exquisite example of Islamic architecture built by Almet I; and the Hippodrome, containing an Egyptian obelisk brought to Constantinople in AD 390 from Egypt. We will also visit the Basilican Cistern which supplied the royal palaces. We will check in to our hotel for two nights.  (D)

Meals : Dinner
Day 3:

Istanbul

Our day will begin with a visit to the city of Kadikoy, where in the fifth century 600 bishops met in the great Council of Chalcedon, which eventually led to separation of the east and west churches in AD 1054. We will then make our way to Iznik where Constantine convened the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in AD 325. Today the city has a large porcelain industry.  We will then make our way to the Topkapi Seraglio Palace, the opulent former sanctum of the sultans, after which we will visit the Grand Bazaar for some shopping.  Next, we will go on a ferry ride down the Bosporus Straits, viewing Istanbul and several beautiful homes, government buildings, and parks. (B/D)

Meals : Breakfast, Dinner
Day 4:

Izmir-Bergama • Thyatira

We will take an early flight to Izmir and visit the site of ancient Smyrna, one of the seven cities having members of the Christian faith addressed by John the Apostle in the book of Revelation.  Our day begins as we learn more about the ancient city of Smyrna (Rev. 2:8–11) and its significance in the book of Revelations.  We will then drive to Bergama (Rev. 2:12–17), which was ancient Pergamum, where we will discuss why John addressed the Saints.  We will see the very impressive acropolis, as well as the Asclepieum and the Red Basilica.  Afterward we will visit another of the seven cities at Thyatira (Rev. 2:18–29). We will overnight in Izmir. (B/D)

Finally, we will visit Colossae and learn more about what the Apostle Paul taught the Colossian Saints. We will travel to Kusadasi and stay two nights, after a wonderful day visiting cities of the Christian faithful from the first century AD.

Day 6:

Miletus • Kusadasi (Ephesus)

After a restful night’s sleep, we will drive to the port city of Miletus, where Paul taught and tearfully exhorted the Saints to remain faithful.  We will next make our way to the most impressive Roman ruins in the world, those of the ancient city of Ephesus. This famous city was the capital of the Asia Province and the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the great Temple of Artemis (called Diana by the Romans).  Paul spent more than three years in Ephesus on his third missionary journey, and John spent many years here at a later time.  You will walk through the marble streets of this city, seeing the ruined library, baths, latrines, marketplace, temples, and the huge theater mentioned in Acts 19

At Eleusis for hundreds of years, a Greek endowment comforted and blessed thousands. We will travel west by bus around the Saronic Gulf, which separates Attica from the Peloponnese (the southern peninsula of Greece), crossing the famous Corinth Canal (a 4.2-mile-long channel cut between the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf).   Then we will go on to Corinth to discuss the work of Paul, who lived here for one and a half years, and his two epistles directed to the Corinthian Saints. Our last stop will be Mycenae, where great treasures of golden objects from the days of Homer’s Greece were discovered.
