Day 1: Saturday, August 31, 2024 - Arrive in Lisbon

Today we arrive in Lisbon. We will relax with a free afternoon in the city with time to unwind and explore the history and culture. Welcome dinner at local restaurant.

Day 2: Sunday, September 1 – Tour of Lisbon

Breakfast at the hotel. We begin with a walking tour of Lisbon. There’s a lot to see amid the hustle and bustle of the city of the 7 hills. Walk through the cobblestone streets as your guide tells you about the history of the capital. Taste some of the best Portuguese treats—like the famous nata pastry—and hear about the culture of fado music. We start your tour at Rossio Square and visit the heart of both old and new Lisbon. Your local guide explains how an earthquake destroyed the city in the 1700s. See the obelisk in Restauradores Square and the intricate neo-Manueline architecture of the old Central Train Station. Then the elegant neighborhood of Chiado awaits you with its old cafés, boutiques, and theaters. You will have time to indulge in the famous nata pastry. Continue walking to and admire the heart of the city: Baixa – Downtown, that was completely rebuilt after the earthquake of the 18th century, obeying new rules of urbanism and anti-systemic architecture, based on extremely innovative solutions for its time.

Wander through a maze of small squares and narrow alleyways in the Moorish neighborhood Alfama, where time seems to have stopped hundreds of years ago. You learn about fado, a Portuguese music genre, as you walk by Fado restaurants tucked in between alleys and winding streets. We’ll stop at an old wine bar for included tapas. Snap some beautiful photos and then walk to your last stop, the majestic Commerce Square, the former entrance hall of the city. After an included lunch we will visit the Castelo de São Jorge the most recognized of Lisbon's major attractions, St. George's Castle commands a glorious position near Alfama on the crown of a hill overlooking the Portuguese capital.

This is one of Lisbon's most popular tourist destinations. Its impressive battlements, engaging museum, and fascinating archaeological site combine to make the castle a rewarding experience for the whole family, and kids especially will love clambering over the sturdy walls and towers that encircle the grounds. There's been a stronghold on this site since the Iron Age, but it was a castle that the Moors defended against invading Christian forces before finally being overrun in 1147 by Afonso Henriques. The victorious king built the Aláçova Palace, home to subsequent monarchs until a new royal residence was constructed near the river (The palace foundations form part of the excavations seen today). Then back to our hotel for free time and relaxing before a dinner on own.

Day 3: Monday, September 2 – Day Trip to Sintra & Cascais

The romantic charm of Sintra and Cascais is on full display as you get to know these idyllic towns. Your guide shows you the lush forests, gardens, and grand palaces that combine with the coastal beauty of Cabo da Roca to form some of the most beautiful scenery in Portugal. Once we meet our guide, a drive in a comfortable coach takes you out from your hotel and into the fairytale landscape of the Sintra hills. Your first stop lets you step into the colorful Romanticist castle of Pena Palace, where you can admire the views over Lisbon from its balconies and explore the elegant halls of a fortress considered one of Europe's most beautiful. Next, you head downhill to visit the postcard-worthy village of Sintra, known for its well-preserved 19th-century architecture and delectable pastries. Browse for some charming souvenirs before you move on to Cabo da Roca, where you can admire the sea from the westernmost point on mainland Europe.

The last leg of your journey takes you along the coastal road to the mouth of the Tagus, with a stop at the village of Cascais along the way. Learn about the history of exiled kings and World War II espionage as you explore the peaceful fishing village, and then follow the magnificent Avenida Marginal for a look at the Estoril coast as you head back to Lisbon. Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 4: Tuesday, September 3 – Two Cities in One Day: Nazaré & Óbidos

Get comfortable in an air-conditioned vehicle as we start our journey toward the town of Óbidos, where we will start with a guided tour accompanied by our expert local guide. Completely surrounded by ancient walls and preserving all its medieval charm, Óbidos is one of the most famous and visited places in Portugal, a must-see in the surroundings of Lisbon. The narrow-cobbled streets that can be seen in Óbidos will immediately transport you to a medieval atmosphere. These streets are home to perfectly preserved old houses, historic buildings, important monuments and, dominating the historic center in the highest part of the village, the Castle of Óbidos, declared one of the 7 wonders of Portugal. You will start at the village main gate, and then discover amazing narrow streets outside of the beaten track. Walk along Rua Dereita, the most famous street, full of stores and traditional restaurants and get to the castle of Óbidos. It can be said that it is one of the best preserved and largest fortresses of the country, being listed as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. From where you will clearly see the great wall of Óbidos, another of the town’s great symbols.

Continue the trip heading to possibly the most famous fishing town in Portugal, Nazaré, where we will visit the Forte de Sao Miguel. This site has become world-famous for the giant wave that hits its coast every winter and attracts lots of surfers from all over the world. Then walk through O Sitio, where the famous streets present a collection of religious buildings and are a hugely popular site for pilgrims from all around the globe. Hike your way up to the summit, where you'll find medieval fortifications, 17th-century churches, and modern shrines. Wander the courtyards and plazas surrounded by ornate structures, basilicas and statues. At the end of our tour, we will return to the center of Lisbon.
